Fabiola

Designer: Milo Van Aelst

Bio of the designer:

Milo Van Aelst is a Belgian furniture designer with a background in architectural engineering. His work focuses on the relationship between design, craftsmanship and circularity. Rather than treating existing furniture as waste, he explores how its materials, identity and history can become the starting point for new designs.

title:

Fabiola

short description:

Fabiola is a design system that gives discarded wall units a second life. Each existing cabinet is dismantled and its components are reassembled into a contemporary piece of furniture. The system is based on a set of seven geometric elements cut from the original solid oak doors, allowing for a wide range of different configurations. For Dutch Design Week, Fabiola is presented through two new pieces: a lowboard/TV cabinet and a coffee table. Both are made from the components of a former wall unit, preserving its material and traces of history while giving it a new function and identity.

materials used:

Reclaimed solid oak and oak-veneered particleboard from an existing wall unit. Existing components and hardware are reused where possible. New materials are limited to necessary joining elements such as wood glue and dowels.
