Ceramic Ashtray, Lighter & Sigarette Holder

Designer: Sainte Lioba Monastery

Short description: This Ashtray is a design by Hildergard Michaelis and originally was made as a candle stick holder for their church in France. Here at Dutch Design Week it is presented as an Ashtray, Lighter and Cigarette holder in one.

Handmade by the nuns from the French monastery, Sainte Lioba. In the production process as the clay dries fast, it needs to be made very orderly and efficiently and requires three sisters to work collaboratively at the same time.

Bio of the designer: Sainte Lioba, a name meaning "kindness" and "love" is a monastery in the Netherlands and France. The object showcased here is made at the Monastery in the South of France. The Monastery was founded by Hildegard Michaelis (1900–1982) who also became the first Mother Superior. Born in Erfurt, Germany, in 1900 she was trained as an artist at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg. Her spirit lives on today within the community that still works there in her artistic signature.
